First annual update on “Paediatric Transfusion Medicine Practice”.

The Department of Transfusion Medicine and Department of Paediatric Hemato-Oncology of Super Speciality Paediatric Hospital and Post Graduate Teaching Institute (SSPH & PGTI), Noida in collaboration organized the First annual update on Paediatric Transfusion Medicine Practice on 6th August 2017. The theme of the CME was “Introduction to Paediatric Transfusion Medicine Practice” with the aim to sensitize the fellow paediatric clinicians & Transfusion medicine specialists about the basics as well as the advancements in the field of paediatric transfusion medicine. The CME was accredited with UP Medical Council for 4 CME hours. The CME was conducted under the aegis of Indian Society of Transfusion Medicine (ISTM) and Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP) Noida chapter. The event was supported by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Medical Council of India (MCI).

A souvenir, comprised of the chapters submitted by all the speakers, was released by the Dean, SSPH & PGTI during the inaugural program. The scientific sessions were focused on transfusion needs in neonatal and paediatric practices. The session began with introductory concept of present scenario of paediatric transfusion as a sub-specialty in India. Other sessions dealt with application of immune-hematology in paediatric transfusion, transfusion transmitted infection screening, clinical transfusion and component therapy & therapeutic apheresis applications in paediatrics. The recent advances on new therapeutic products such as hematopoietic stem cells and CAR-T cells were discussed. Recent guidelines on paediatric transfusion practices were also discussed in detail. Demonstration of basic immunohematology tests and therapeutic apheresis was done in the blood bank. Hands-on training station was set up for central line insertion in paediatric patient. Panel discussion was conducted on transfusion reactions in paediatric transfusion and hemovigillance network in India. Eminent faculty from Transfusion Medicine, Paediatrics, Paediatric hemato-oncology, and Pathology shared their experiences in the field & gave a platform for lively discussions. The CME was attended by more than 150 delegates from across the country. The delegates consisted of paediatricians, hemato-oncologists, transfusion medicine specialists, pathologists and medical officers managing blood banks. Delegates were practitioners as well as residents and students in their respective fields. The objective of the CME was to create awareness about the transfusion practices in paediatrics. The department of transfusion medicine at SSPH & PGTI, Noida plans to provide such platforms annually, in future, for discussing more unaddressed issues in paediatric transfusion medicine practice.​​​​
