On occasion of Retinoblastoma awareness week a public awareness program was organized on 13th May 2022 in PGICH, Noida by department of Ophthalmology.

Retinoblastoma arises as a cancerous growth from retinal cells. Many cases are familial and some may be without family history or sporadic. It usually occurs in children below 5 years of age and 43 % cases of retinoblastoma are found in developing countries. In India 1500 new cases are diagnosed every year.

Dr Divya Jain Associate Professor, Ophthalmology told that the presence of white reflex in eye seen eyes and in photographs , squint, redness, and enlargement of the eye can be signs of retinoblastoma, so timely examination is crucial to pick up disease at right time. When diagnosed timely treatment modalities like laser photocoagulation, thermotherapy, cryotherapy, chemotherapy can prevent vision loss and save the eye. In advanced cases it can be spread to various organs such as brain, spine so we have to get regular check ups and timely treatment.

Dr Vikrant Sharma additional professor also stressed on eye check up in case of doubt of disease.
